Have you ever been to...

Helena-West Helena? Neither had I until...

Meet Julia Malinowski.

The picture below is when Julia voluntarily threw herself into the vicious man-eating Kudzu.
Okay, so it's not vicious or man-eating, but it is considered a nuisance. I've always been fascinated by it's appearance and vast ability to spread far and wide.

Her official job title is Director of Helena Advertising and Promotion Commission,

but her name says it all, JEWEL-ya!

Isn't she too cute?

She's a doll, y'all.

I seriously wanted to pick her up and put her in my pocket.

The Helena Advertising and Promotions Commission invited a group of Arkansas Women Bloggers to come to Helena-West Helena to see what it was all about.

A group of us gals began receiving information on Helena, along with a jam-packed itinerary, several weeks before our trip. Julia had a very structured outline with few minutes to spare to see all the sights and then some!

In my mind, I pictured Julia as somewhat older than myself, a longtime resident of Helena, and very enthusiastic about her job.

When I met Julia, I was SURPRISED to find a young newlywed and a recent implant to Helena. She has been in Helena for about 3.5 years. Julia has been working in her position for LESS than a year. She has only recently joined forces with the great folks of Helena in their tremendous efforts to revamp and revive their hometown. This big city girl (moved from New York) fell in love with Helena's small town lot.

I was right about one thing -- she is definitely on FIRE for Helena! Julia knows a tremendous amount of information. And she knows it by heart. By heart because she cares, and it shows. I enjoyed the interactions of this young professional with various folks in Helena. She knows the ins and outs, and ups and downs. She knows how to make connections, and how to form relationships.

This was my first trip to Helena, and several whom I mentioned I was going asked me why? After a short visit to Helena, I was fueled with reasons for visiting this quaint little town. AND, Julia did a FABULOUS job of showing us the many things that Helena-West Helena has to offer.

I'll be sharing more on my trip to Helena. I'll give details and adventures from our fun trip! If you are considering taking a trip to Helena, I suggest you call Julia.

You might just want to put her in your pocket, too.

My Guaranteed Smile

Have you smiled today?

Do you ever have days that go from zero to sixty from the moment your feet hit the floor until you lay your head on your pillow at night?

Have you ever made it through most of the day, maybe even the WHOLE day without a laugh, without a smile?

I used this photo of D on a Mugshot Monday.

I recently changed it to my screen saver on my phone.

I can't look at it without smiling.

Can.not.do.it.

Something about that face...

I encourage you to have something you look at frequently (yes, folks. I know it's pitiful that mine is my phone...)

and put something there that will GUARANTEE a smile.

It makes a bad day BETTER and enhances a HAPPY day!

You CAN'T go wrong!

A Light Bulb Moment

Brrrrrr...

It's cold out there, y'all!

We survived the last dip into the arctic temps, they bounced up and down for a bit, and now we're experiencing another few days in the potential freezing weather.

(There was a time when I thought anything below 32 degrees guaranteed some form of snow, sleet or ice. Give me a break...I was a kid. Or, was that last year?)

I am training for the Little Rock Marathon, and we have stuck it out with our outdoor running. "Feels like 23" and "Feels like 7" can be a little intimidating when the alarm goes off at 4:30am. The LAST thing I want do is roll out of my super cozy bed and hit the pavement to freeze to death, but, a mama's gotta do what a mama's gotta do.

(See that GINORMOUS medal with "Epic" on it? That's part of my inspiration)

(photo from here)

Now, there are days...

days that I have the chance to rinse off and hop back in bed either before the alarm goes off, or if the girls don't have school...

and I want to take FULL advantage.

The problem:

when I get back in bed - I FREEZE!

And I canNOT warm up.

I try to use the hubs as a heater, and I about chase him out of bed with my cold feet.

I've worn warm, fuzzy socks. And it helps...but it doesn't do the trick.

I shiver and shiver and it takes a good 30-45 minutes to warm up. Most days, that's when it's time to get up and get going.

SO = I had a light bulb moment the other day.

I went for my run (and it was COLD. in the thirties. the wind was KICKIN'),

hopped in the shower (DREADED getting out. I did NOT want to go through the shiver drill. Although, it wasn't enough to keep me from getting back in bed),

THEN, I decided to put on a warm hat, warm gloves, and cozy socks.

I got in the bed...

AHHHHHHHH...

Didn't shiver once!

What in the world took me that long to figure that out?

Who knows? (yes, this is a rhetorical question)

But, I thought I would share in case someone else has experienced something similar...

It happens, people.

I did receive strange looks and inquisitions as to why I was decked out in a hat and gloves along with my snuggly socks, BUT...

I can handle that crew. No worries...

just WARMTH!

All about Bean

My sweet Baby Bean...

Bless her...

This mama has NOT done a very good job with documenting her milestones.

I have heights, weights, and percentiles scattered on appointment cards in this drawer and that folder. I have snapshots and iPhone videos of her flying by in action.

SO, let me tell ya a little bit about this sweet child of mine.

This baby girl LOVES her sleep.

She has been a good sleeper from the word GO (goodness knows once I post this that will all change...).

She has been known to sleep up to 16-17 hours consecutively as a baby. And now, if she is able, will sleep anywhere from 14-16 hours. AND take a nap. Well, don't get me wrong. It's not as easy as it once was...

She is at a crossroads.

She LOVES to be with her sisters. She wants so badly to stay in their room, but just can't make herself settle down enough to actually SLEEP.

She "turns herself in" by coming to get the hubs or me. If she's super-tired, she will hold her arms out and go without resistance. If she's playing the game -- she comes and peeps in and makes sure we see her, then she RUNS back down the hallway squealing the whole way. These last couple of weeks she has been especially reluctant. It takes her a few minutes to settle down, but she doesn't stay fired up for long.

I haven't even told you that we survived getting rid of "pappi" (her pacifier) fairly painlessly. I couldn't believe it. Still can't.

I wish I could say I played a role, but I really didn't. Our wonderful babysitter, Ms. P, had her taking naps without it. She would tell her, "pappi's gone", and after a few inquiries Bean would be fine and drift off to zzzzzzland. During that initial transition, Bean would still want pappi when she was with us. I thought to myself, "this is NEVER going to happen". I think in part, I didn't want it to. I didn't feel as though I was ready. Having her pappi was a big part of her baby-self, and I didn't want that to be gone. No more babies at the Coffee House, so I selfishly wanted to cling to anything that kept her a "baby". That, and the fact that I know a good dentist...(just kidding, Mom)

I don't remember the exact day (see, just another example of poor mommy documentation), but it was bedtime and I thought...I'll try laying her down with out pappi for the night.

We did our normal routine, and then it came time for me to put her in bed (she is still in her crib. Yeah - not giving that one up until she is climbing out of that puppy!)

We looked in the regular spots and there was no pappi. No pappi here. No pappi there. No pappi in her bed. I went with the story of, "remember that we talked about the pappi fairy coming and taking all your pappies to babies that need them? Well, it's time. You don't need pappi anymore".

She went around the house saying "Paaaaaaaaapppppiiiiii, paaaaaaaapppppiiiii" and I started to worry.

I kept talking her through it. I distracted her a bit with story time. We read a couple of books, and then it was TIME. Time for the TEST.

I bundled her up in her sleep sack, handed her lammie (I'm not cruel, folks. She can have lammie as long as lammie will last. At at this rate, she could be limbless in a few months) sang her a song, and layed her down.

I literally had tings of pain in my heart, people. This was tough on a mama! I declare, as I layed her down that little one said in the tiniest of voices, "I'm scared".

I about lost it.

I was about to search until I found a pappi and give it to my sweet, sweet baby.

But, I didn't.

And she didn't...

cry.

She didn't make a sound.

In fact,

she slept ALL night.

Just like she normally does.

When I opened my eyes and realized what had happened, I immediately said a prayer and thanked God for such a blessing. I'm serious -- I've heard the nightmare stories. I was SO thankful!

And we haven't turned back since!

That's not to say that she has never, ever asked for pappi. She has. But, she has never NOT gone to sleep because she didn't have it.

She still loves lammie, but she doesn't need her quite as much either.

They kinda went hand-in-hand, and now she just likes to have her for sleeping.

Other happenings...

She talks in the most precious voice, in the most broken way. I just love it. I'm one of those mom's that lets her kiddos say a word the "wrong" way because it is SO super cute. (I know, my speech path friends around the world are cringing. I promise I wouldn't let her do it until she's sixteen...maybe ten or twelve. Usually by the time I remember to document the cuteness they've outgrown it.)

Right now, one of my favorites is "Don't hike it" (I don't like it). She'll eat 3/4 of a banana and decide she wants something else. This is usually when she lets me know she doesn't "hike" it.

"I dude it" (I do it).

She followed in her sister's footsteps to say "dude it" and I just adore it!

AND, hot off the press: Bean was walking around with a little Barbie computer. Babe was over at our house watching the girls and asked Bean what she was carrying. She replied, "my POOTER". Of course, we had  to have her say fifteen times more. It was precious. I realize "pooter" is not normally looked upon as the greatest of words. But, when you have precious little lips that pooch out, and sound totally cute while saying it...you can pull it off. She did exactly that.

I may not be able to relay the cuteness in this one, but she when she gets excited she can't verbally keep up with her what she wants to express and it comes out as jibber jabber. She wants to tell us she's been a good girl by napping or sleeping well and she runs up and says "sdfj ljjiwe jjfsjfl jslkdfjlsjf kjk fkj", puts her little hands near her face and leans her head over likes she's sleeping and says, "hawshoo hawshoo hawshoo" real fast. Okay...so,that may just be one of those you-had-to-be-there type of situations. So glad that I am.

She loves baby dolls and her big sisters.

She a daddy's girl, and a mama's dream.

I love her to pieces and I'm so thankful to have the chance to get to know this little person.

This is a tiny glimpse into the life of Bean with pappi and lammie...
(No, lammie is not a dog toy. She has loved her into that shape. Lammie has a very, ahem, unique smell that only Bean can love. She's been washed...well, on occasion. Bean likes to rub her nose with Lammie's ear. Sometimes Bean rubs her hands and feet and tummy, too. She makes this humming sound at the same time. It's a trip!)

Silent Night, Holy...SMOKES!

I LOVE Christmas.

I love and appreciate the TRUE meaning of Christmas.

BUT, I also love the traditions and fun family times as well.

As our family has grown, I've really tried to make sure that we have some traditions of our own.

One of those is that we attend the candlelight service at our church on Christmas Eve.

I adore the candlelight service...

The church is FULL of families from near and far.

You get to see faces you haven't seen in a while.

You get to see and HEAR the little ones that may not normally attend "Big Church".

I'm sure it's distracting to some, but I love how it gives kiddos a chance to be a part of a service that is  all about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Along with beautiful music and a sermon, our church offers the Lord's supper and ends in candlelight while we sing "Silent Night".

With our fam and my in-laws, we occupy almost a whole pew. The kiddos were a little restless at times, but all-in-all, I thought they behaved really well.

We made it through the Lord's supper without much ado.

When it came time for the candlelight part of the service the girls were bubbling with excitement. This is one of their favorite parts. When else do they get to hold a live flame in their little hands?

D was seated next to another church member (someone that was not in our family). I was proud that she wasn't too bashful or shy to take the flame and pass it on to her YOUNGER sister. J could hardly contain herself. She proudly placed her wick to D's flame and attempted to light her candle. It was a no-go. I had to intervene. We finally had all of our candle's lit and continued down the row. Next up - the Hubs and L. The Hubs was holding L and L was holding the candle. She was doing so well! She held that little candle in her tiny hands and looked like an angel. I had a mommy moment. I looked to my left at D and J -- they were proudly holding their candles and singing "Silent Night". I looked over at L and the Hubs and thanked God for my precious family. I turned my head to look at D and J once more when a burst of flame caught my sight on the right side.

It was L!

The next thing I saw was the Hub's hand flying and smacking the flame. Unfortunately, L's head and the flame were one. L's mouth flew wide open with no sound. I waited for the shrill scream to come...

and it did. Right in the middle of "Silent Night".

The putrid smell of burnt hair filled the air of the sanctuary.

It was pretty surreal.

Did that just happen?

L was quickly passed to end of the pew, and her Babe escorted her out to the lobby.

THANKFULLY, we can laugh about it now. I'm well aware it could have quickly gone in the opposite direction.

Poor Hubs.

He felt terrible.

It all happened SO fast...

I'm so glad that our Baby L was bouncing around by the time we filed out of church.

She got her FIRST big-girl haircut as a result of the flame. So serious. So sleepy.

Ta-da! All SMILES!

From Blog Funk to GO

2014.

Wait a minute...

What happened to 2013?

Come and gone...

Unfortunately, 2014 has picked up where 2013 left off in the tech area. I'm having computer, phone and internet issues. Pretty much EVERYTHING I need to blog.

I'm in a blog funk.

Anyone else experience this?

Taking time to blog is difficult enough. When other forces in the world make that MORE challenging...

I'm afraid I fold.

I take pictures (when my phone allows) and think of what great blog posts they will make.

I look at and listen to my girls and think of all the things they say and do that need to be in a post.

I eat at yummy restaurants and want to share pictures and stories of the fabulous food that will have you practically tasting it!

And then I sit down to blog...

NOTHING. Notta. Zilch.

Yep. I'm a bloggy loser.

Time to REVAMP and get with the program.

I've arranged for some help that will HOPEFULLY lessen my technical burden.

Because I just. can't. deal. with the technological world on my own.

My ignorance has defeated me once again.

BUT, just as I have done before, I will dust myself off, and bounce back!

Besides...

this crew gives me something to blog about!

I don't know what's funnier...these silly faces or the fact that my sweater formed a prego belly. So, contrary to what this photo may relay -- I am NOT pregnant! I only wish I was talented enough with photoshop to fix that horrible pseudobelly!
